British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of entry passages leading to the facility... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their valour," he said. "Including them were thousands of UK service members on duty over the festive period. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, highlights how British military are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
