The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

As any significant honors show nears, you'll find a clamor for introducing additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category during that awards season
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary game development, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
